Review: The Necronomicon

Fate Magazine book reviews:
The Necronomicon

by Fred Crowley

I wasn’t very impressed by the sight of the book when it showed up on my desk for review. Sure it was bound with the skin of man and written in blood, but I didn’t like the font the title was written in.

I let it sit for a few days in favor of a few other reads like Hexes: Fuck over people who were mean to you in school and The Succubae Tales (an excellent read by the way, see last months reviews!) but finally I picked up the dusty old tome and opened to the first page.

You know, the first thing I thought when I picked up The Necronomicon was “I must eat human brains,” but after the initial impression wore off, I decided to give the book a real chance.

The book opens with a tale of its own origin, a dark and mysterious monologue that goes back to the dark spawning of time itself and the deepest recesses of human depravity. A slow starter.

The book was causing stillbirths in the local populace so I decided to take it with me over the weekend when I made a trip out of town. I thought maybe a quiet wooded setting might get me in the mood for a little evil from before time began. I turned off my cell phone and flipped to where I had stopped.

All hail Blurrgothmorgg!

I’m not really sure what the three chapters I read that weekend were about, but I woke up naked and covered in blood Monday morning so they must have been pretty good. I took a quick shower and headed back to the office.

I found myself reading in the car at stoplights and in heavy traffic, something I hate when other people do, but I couldn’t help myself. Speaking of not being able to help myself, I rammed a baby over a rusty spike in my backyard and it was more fun than I thought it would be.

As I read more and more, I had that urge to tell someone about the book, but of course you don’t want to spoil it for people who haven’t read it yet themselves. That’s when Vythrandygaz came to live in my head. We talked about the book and all about some of the really bitching illustrations on some of the pages. There’s this really cool one of a circle of death with the aspect of Chllgrthornox inscribed in the house of Mercury.

This is a book that really grabs you by the soul and doesn’t let go! I mean, even when I wasn’t reading it I was thinking about it and dedicating my every action to Blurrgothmorgg. I eat this donut in the name of Blurrgothmorgg even as I write this.

If you’re looking for a book that will wrest your conscious mind from you and devour your very living essence this is definitely the book you’ve been waiting for. Surprises on every page, action, romance, satanic rituals, the book has it all, and definitely worth a re-read.

I gave it five sacrificed virgins on a scale of one to five.

Comes out on July 19th in human skin and on December 13th in paperback.
